Circle of Friends

2007

Circle of Friends is a series of small single-channel videos with seven parts, one for each day of the week.

In each of the videos, a man is shown from different vantages, alone and performing auto-fellatio.

Viewed on small monitors that are isolated and installed near to the floor, the figure inhabits his own corner, oblivious to the outside world around him and alienated.  However self-involved the figure, his performative act demands an audience; the work touches on the notion of the viewers’ “gaze” and voyeurism, and questions the role of artist.  In this regard, the work takes on the spirit of a self-portrait.
